Today, I learnt that there is a ChatGPT-like-software designed specifically for lawyers by Vplex, which is part of Clio. My client, Daniel Hobson, hired me to document his attendance at this special seminar held by lawyers, for lawyers. Daniel was part of a panel sharing his expertise and explaining how Vincent can support lawyers in their everyday work.

For corporate photography and videography projects like these, there is usually a familiar template — the standard gimbal movements, wide-angle shots, scenes of speakers presenting, networking moments, and thought-sharing sessions. A few days before the shoot, I reached out to Daniel to propose a simple interview-style video that could help piece together a story about what Vincent is truly about instead of watching just another corporate event video.

Before the event started, we stepped outside and staged a simple scene of Daniel speaking to an imaginary person. Within seconds, he nailed every detail in a single take. He spoke about his thoughts on attending events like these, as well as how Vincent can benefit lawyers around the world — nothing too technical and nothing overly scripted. It was all about creating human emotion and being relatable. Interviews are common in corporate videos, but the way you phrase questions or direct the conversation can completely change the story being told. In this case, it reflected Daniel’s professionalism and experience, which naturally helps build trust with his audience.

During the event itself, I wanted to approach things from perspectives that most people would never get to see — angles hidden from the audience seated in front of the stage or those watching through a screen. I found myself hiding behind the stage and slowly stepping out from time to time to capture shots from the back and sides, waiting patiently for moments of laughter, reactions, and even the calm before the discussions began.

I approached the event from multiple perspectives: what the audience would see, what someone standing beside the stage might experience, what the panellists themselves would see, and even the speakers’ point of view. I treated it almost like a drama series, using different scenes and perspectives to tell the story of four speakers on stage.

Afterwards, I took some solo shots of Daniel, creating a more isolated and portrait-like look in case he wanted to use them for his profile photo or other professional purposes. I understand that my role is not only to document the event as it happened, but also to remember who my client is, focusing on the person I am there to represent.

Next came the networking session. Things were slightly quieter during this period since it was after office hours and most people were busy enjoying their food. Still, I noticed a few curious lawyers stopping by the Vplex booth, so I captured moments of them speaking with Daniel and his team. These small interactions help complete the overall story, allowing the final film and photos to feel cohesive from beginning to end.

Lastly, I chose a specific colour tone during editing to make Daniel stand out — something darker and moodier, but not overly dramatic. I toned down distracting colours from the venue lighting to create a cleaner, more neutral visual style that felt easier on the eyes.

In the end, it was a really enjoyable shoot. I got to meet some genuinely fun lawyers, joke around with the team, and enjoy a mini photo session that went from standard LinkedIn-style poses to completely candid and playful group shots of Daniel and his team.
